I do really like these images as the shape of the perfume bottles is what I would like to see for the new deodorant shape. The oval shape I feel would stand out to new and old customers I would like to think this is an easier shape to hold and also be a personal shape to those who are using it.
As part of my design the graphics on the bottle is the main part of communication in an industry way I have to think how this would be done. I have done some research into the way that a deodorant can is made so I can really decided on the shape of the bottle I want.
With this information I feel that I can do the circle shape bottle however I feel that this can be achieved by the bottle not being completely round so instead being in shape of hip flask as the front and back will be a smooth surface.
So a bit like this kind of shape as I think this would look good and would be cheaper in the long run as you won't have to have special made machines to add the graphics.
The Design
This is the current logo for Garnier, I think the logo is very simple along with being easy to read and is a very recognisable logo. I also think people remember 'Take care' as well because it just flows as a sentence which works as it's catchy people will remember the brand.
The way the logo is used however on the deodorant product doesn't I feel appeal to the customer as it's very boring and not personal which is what the brand wants to represent, your beauty. As I have been looking at a new shape for the bottle I think a new logo as well for this particular product.
As Garnier is all about nature and the natural beauty I want to find some way to represent this?
With the above drawings these are the first designs of the new bottle and how I can imagine it looking. I think that this shape would work and it's a very different shape to the shape used for all the deodorant spray's. I do want a shape that will be easily used for everyday and that could be carried around easily.
I also think this shape would work very well for the compressed cans that are new at the moment, I think this because I don't really think a big version of the bottle would be easy to hold.
I think with this as it's still very new the compressed cans that the word 'compressed' should be on my design so people can see they are keeping up to date which could also improve position in the shops.
To make the bottle look more 3D to see how it would look:
I do think this shows how I wanted the flat and curved sides of the bottle so the graphics will be applied easily.
However I do think that my images will look better if I do drawings without using the 3D tool, I also think this will show my ideas well.
New Logo
The original logo
My ideas for the new logo was to basically keep the Garnier the same but change the colour but also not use 'Take care' either having it plain or find a new slogan. Like I said before I do really like how clear the type is and how recognisable it is.
For an idea I started to look at flowers as I just thought at the time a flower represents beauty so as I was designing a few more ideas I realised how well it went with the design of the new bottle. I feel that this is something that could continue as a range for the different type of deodorant you can get.
Here was one of the first designs I had for the new bottle I had an idea and I wanted to try it out which I think has worked but it might look a bit to complicated with other bits of information when placed on the bottle.
This is the a design that I have thought about for the new logo something simple that can be changed for other types of deodorant as well. I then developed my design further as I wanted to have a different logo for each type of deodorant such as invisible, fresh etc.
All of the above are the types of deodorant that I will be designing the new logos for, I still would like to keep the idea of having flowers as the theme for the re-design.
Types of flowers:
- Blossom
- Daisy
- Rose
- Lily
- Lavender
- Orchid
- Hibiscus
- Petunia
- Corn Flower
- Peony
- Sunflower
- Blue Bell
- Iris
- Tulips
Collecting images of different flowers has also made me realise the colours that I would like to use for the bottle's to signify the differences.
Here is what I did when I started to play around with my logo ideas and I feel that adding the extra circles as it changes the original logo and shows that the product has improved. I also made the Garnier words a little bit lighter in colour to contrast with the images used. I also tried the colour black to as I thought this would change how clear you can see the word however this did not work like I thought. I wasn't sure where to place the word as it I found placing the word over the image you couldn't read it properly and became messy looking. So I then change the position completely from the original to having the word completely to the side as I felt this was a lot better and worked better for the new look.
Here is my first design compared to my other designs I prefer the last design as it's similar to the original Gaenier logo however with my spin on the logo. Adding the extra circles just falls perfectly on the bottle and adds a little extra beauty to the bottle.
As I have a new shape for my deodorant bottle I need to design the lid part of my bottle that fits in with the shape but also is easy for people to use. I have looked at other types of deodorant bottles and I do like the idea of no lid but have a lock on the spray as this is something I have found easy to use myself. However I need to see how this would look on my shape, I also think if I was to chose the lock lid this would help improve the environment by using less material.
Here I tried out two different types of lids, lock on the spray and a removable lid both look good on the design so I just need to decide what I would prefer. The original bottle has a lock lid which I do like and I would like to keep for the new design as it uses less material. Above I have tried out different colours for the lids to represent different types of deodorant.
I have designed a lid to be like this lid as I feel it works well and is very easy to use.
Here are the chosen colours for the bottles, I chose quite neutral colours with the a few bright colours that could stand out from the shelves. This is what I want for this product because at the moment they are green and now pink however they just don't stand out.
The above images are the bottles that I have designed so far, I really like the idea of the three circles as its a development on the old logo. I chose to use the circles in this order as it simple just falls nicely on the bottle I tried to find a flower that matches the colour as well as the type of deodorant.
Extra Words
With the extra words on the bottle I wanted to have a typeface that suited and compromised the word 'Garnier' I chose the font, Snell Roundhead, this a more romantic curvy font that I have chosen firstly. I felt that this compromised the 'Garnier' font nicely and looked different to what I have seen on the shelf. However this font isn't normally what I would chose for my projects as I like to work with sans serif fonts. The way the design is at the moment I feel that this is the best typeface.
As you can see I tried out a variety of fonts, at the time I was designing this particular design I wanted something that worked well with flowers and this is the one that stood out to me. I did try out PassionsPDad however I felt this really didn't fit with the bottle at all and you couldn't really read it well when small on the bottle.
After adding the extra words on the bottle such as 'Ultra dry' etc that signifies what the product is, I made the changes on the rest of the products. Looking at these together they didn't look right as they reminded me of an old perfume for the target audience over 50 instead of a more wide range. This is what I need to stay away from as I feel that the product on the shelves at the moment isn't doing well.
Even though I do like this design and I found a way to use the font in a way I like however this just wouldn't work for the product.
I should look into a more Sans serif fonts as this is a more simple clear font to use.
I chose to look at the Sans serif fonts such as Helvetica and Futura which you can see above, I tried both on the product but I chose to go with the Helvetica light as I think this is a much better younger font for the product which is also easier to read. I do think the Helvetica typeface is a fresher font for the deodorant which is what I have used as a slogan 'Flower Fresh' which I feel fits with it.
Here is how I have used the font Helvetica on the product, I felt having the words all lower case just seemed right and it compromises with Garnier being in capitals. I did try it with both the 'F' in capitals but it just looked to busy and to overwhelming.
New flowers
As a new version of the bottle I wanted to see what the bottle would look like with a different version of the flowers and see if this changes the feel of the bottle at all. To make the flowers seem a bit more feminine I thought about having the flowers hand drawn to give them that natural look.
Here I tried out the flowers in the pink colour that I am using but also making them a bit darker so they would stand out on the bottle. I tried different thicknesses using a dark circle around the images to give it a more edgy look. However I do think the image on it's own looks better and more like I say natural.
(Sorry for bad images they are a thin line thickness)
This is what the design looks like with the flowers in the new design with the new type face etc this looks and works better for the design because comparing it to the previous design the pictures of the flowers seem harsher on the bottle which looking back I don't really like.
Now that I had found the correct thickness etc I wanted to see how it would look with the logo moved about on the bottle. I however feel that after moving the flowers around the bottle it feels like to much is going on in the bottle you don't know where to look. So I went back to the original position as I really liked and other people liked how the flowers fall down the side and around the logo.
Next to the back of the bottle.
New Bottle
Here I wanted to see what the bottle would look like with the bottle pink and the lid a cream colour, I think this works a lot better than I was thinking as I was so used to seeing the bottle cream that I couldn't imagine it any other way. This is a fresh change I feel considering the fact that the existing bottle is failing to sell.
I also feel that that this is such an interesting shape and colour that this is different to other brands.
As I changed the colour of the bottle I decided to have the drawing a cream colour as well as I felt this works better than the original pink flower that I had. Still having the flowers in the same position I feel this would work just as good as the previous bottle I designed.
Here you can see the example of the flowers left in pink and then in cream, I do think that if I was to choose the bottle in pink then I would definitely keep the flowers cream. Looking at the bottle and the extra information on the bottle I feel that if the flowers are in cream then so should the writing? and logo?
I do think this works as I couldn't really imagine it working on the bottle and if it's to much cream maybe?
However after thinking about this more I think the bottle needs a splash of colour? I just feel it's a bit to plain even though I really like it all one colour I just feel it needs something else on the bottle to make the bottle stand out. This is when I have gone back to the colour green as I feel that this represents the original Garnier logo and overall.
I chose a selection of greens to try out on the bottle to see what was easy to read, to see if it stands out and overall if it looks good.
Here I tried out different greens that I thought would work on the bottle.
These to bottles stand out to me more to me as they are a nice green that isn't to dark or a slimy looking green they are a more neutral green that fits in with the cream and pink of the bottle.
Out of the two bottles from the top I feel that this bottle is better as I just think the green contrasts better with the other colours used.
The green also looks fresh on the bottle as well as this is what Garnier's brand values are to be a fresh natural product for the beautiful women. I also feel this is again a better choice then having the text and flowers all cream the green makes the design stand out more and will do on the shelf.
Side of the bottle
As my bottle is a different shape to other deodorants I want to show how the bottle will look from the side as this will help people picture how it will look and how it will be held.
For the lid at the side I want to make sure that I had the right shape and look as I'm not having a lid on my product I needed to get the right shape for a thumb to press.
This is what I had designed something simple and understanding this will fit any size finger.
I wasn't sure on what size I wanted the sides to be I felt that the skinny version would fit my bottle better.
Here is my bottle from the front, side and top view.
